Original research takes a lot of dedication and time. Although the web has made access to the literature faster and easier, it has exponentially increased the amount of information you have to review and organize.

"In summary, I would say that MasterFile is a fantastic electronic document management system.  I would highly recommend it
to anyone who is involved in any kind of research ..."-- Linda Hayes

MasterFile is your complete research journal. A unique system designed specifically to help you stay on top of your research every step of the way from assertion to QED, starting with capturing papers off the web through setting out summary digests of related material, assessing the relevance of each item to your hypothesis and finally referencing it in your own research to support your hypotheses.

Your research project's "masterfile" -- Pinpoint any document in 2 or 3 clicks by author, document type, etc.

MasterFile's unique document and evidence repository lets you organize all your research material from the literature, PDF articles, web pages, raw data or spreadsheets, scanned paper reports, theses, manuscripts, photos or other digital images, communications with other experts, and so forth. Its unique views let you put your finger on any item in your library with just 2 or 3 mouse clicks. Advanced Google style search is there when you need it.

MasterFile databases are created for each research project, each becoming the central store for a project's research your notes, thoughts, findings and conclusions -- its "masterfile" or research journal.

Documents are no longer strewn across dozens of folders on flash drives, servers, workstations, laptops, e-mail systems, etc. Similarly, notes and other information is not strewn across a mix of programs like shoe-box databases, electronic sticky notes, web page highlighters or other ad-hoc systems.

Reference databases can also be created for your specific areas of expertise or interest, not just accumulating but extracting critical findings, saving time locating critical research relevant to your work.

    Extract repository
See what's important at a glance.

Literature from the web is loaded in PDF format and text is extracted so, using MasterFile's Extract technology, you can immediately digest and classify passages of key information by issue or topic as well as make notes. And it's all visible at a glance.

For large reports from which you only require a passage or two, you create a "stub" and then simply lift the extracts directly off the paper using the optional C-Pen hand held scanner -- the pen that types as you highlight! All these extracts are your key evidence so we make sure they're always visible and not buried away.

    Argument Drafting
Set out and substantiate your thesis point by point.

When it comes to assessing the facts against various hypothesis under consideration, setting out your findings, your theories or conclusions and documenting the rational behind them, MasterFile and its unique Argument Toolbox comes into its own.

First use the live "by Issue/Topic" views to review all the extracts for a given issue or topic at a glance. For example, in a research project on climate change, the issues could be "Melting polar ice", "Sunspot cycles", "Temperature changes on other planets", etc. Issues and topics can be organized into a hierarchical outline upto three levels deep -- i.e. Section, subsection and issue/topic.

Then create fact records for each issue and assess the relevance of the fact to each hypothesis you're researching. Link in the substantiating or corroborating evidence as you go. No more arrows pointing here and there -- and no more thumbing through pages of notes finding what you want. Write as much detail as you need, format it as you want.

Related or follow up questions are also easily tracked in MasterFile.
