Release Notes highlight improvements we’ve made so you can easily see what’s new. Version 10 brings new features as well as a raft of enhancements for a smoother user experience. We hope you like it!
The big news for V10 are Grab n Go PDF Bundles. They’re like nothing you’ve seen before: a new, easy way to assemble and prepare bundles of documents for:
- filings like Books of Evidence or Authorities,
- attachments to affidavits,
- briefs or case chronologies hyper-linked to the supporting documents,
- even preparing material for client meetings or examinations, witness binders and so much more.
We’ve also enhanced PDF bundles created from Exhibit Briefcases to automatically insert numbered separator pages (i.e “Tab 1”, “Tab 2”, etc.) between each document if needed.
What’s new
PDF Bundles
In litigation, various types of filings and document collections such as Books of Evidence, Books of Authorities, exhibits to affidavits, trial binders, witness binders, materials for client meetings or discovery, key facts or case chronology with supporting documents, etc., take time to prepare with their tables of contents and separator pages.
Other filings and document collections need numbered separator pages, such “Tab 1”, “Tab 2”, or “Exhibit 1”, “Exhibit 2”, etc.
MasterFile’s PDF Bundles let you create such filings and document collections easily. PDF Bundles are self-contained hyperlinked collections of your documents. Here are a few examples to help you see what you can do with them and quickly get your filings ready.
Click to view the sample PDF bundles below. The red “Doc-links” you’ll see are hyperlinks which jump to your documents in the PDF Bundle.
- Books of Evidence (Format 1) – Table of contents at the start followed by documents
- Books of Authorities (Format 1) – Table of contents at the start followed by documents

Updates and improvements
Mixed productions
When creating PDF format productions, stub files are now created for native documents missing PDF copies to inform reviewers the documents were produced in native format.
Global Replace
Global Replace now operates on extract and fact profiles so their details can also be revised in bulk like it does for documents.
Global Redactions
Redactions can now be applied to a group of documents. So now, to redact a phone number in several documents, for example, you don’t need to create separate redaction extracts for each document, one by one.
Document families
Document families, such as an email and its attachments, can now be quickly created, revised or removed as needed.
Other enhancements
- Documents
- In v10, if an e-mail contains a PDF copy, the OCR field now contains the text extracted from the PDF and the native e-mail meta-data is stored its own field.
- Coloured flags are now available for documents and facts, not just extracts.
- Evidence Cruncher
- The Evidence Cruncher will now process e-mails so they can be re-processed and converted to PDF if needed.
- Briefcases
- New Database Fix-up Utility lets you re-transfer production history from a briefcase to the source database in case you erased it by mistake.
- Views
- When documents are added to the briefcase, they are added in chronological order so the oldest document gets the lowest Bates number. A new view lets you reverse that so documents can be produced in reverse chronological order, so that the newest document gets the lowest Bates number.
- Default security for new databases
- User access security set on the MasterFile Template, becomes the default security for new case databases.
- Grab n Go Briefs
- New option to remove background shading and colours when making a report table from the fact or chronology views.
- Redactions
- Search string redactions now return the number of hits matched.
- Non-regex redaction strings are now case insensitive.
- Facts
- Chronological events can now display a shorter or alternative description on graphic timelines.
- Excel spreadsheets can be used directly
- Tools, such as Express Load, that require CSV files, can now use Excel spreadsheets (.XLSX files) directly, making it faster and easier to create or update load files when needed.
- Emails
- Emails can now be directly loaded from MBOX files.
- Emails now can be filtered by date, sender, recipient, subject or message body when loading from MBOX, Outlook or Outlook PST files.
